From $5K to $500K Ad Spend: The Card Strategy That Scales With You
There is no single best card for media buying — only the right card for your current stage. The card that maximizes value at $5K/month becomes the bottleneck at $50K/month. Here's the progression by spend level.

$5K/month — open Chase Ink Business Preferred only
$60K/year of Meta spend x 3x UR x 2.2 cents = $3,960 in realized value. Annual fee $95. Net: $3,865/year on a single card. No other card needs to exist at this stage. Don't over-optimize.
$10K/month — switch primary to Amex Business Gold
4x on $120K/year = 480K MR = $9,600 realized. Keep Ink Preferred for shipping and non-Meta categories. Add Ink Unlimited (no fee) for catch-all 1.5x. Total stack value: ~$11K/year.
$25K/month — Amex Gold caps; add Venture X Business
Amex Gold hits its $150K/year cap by month 6. Route the remaining $150K to Venture X Business at 2x uncapped. Now earning at premium rates on every dollar. Stack value: ~$17K/year.
$50K/month — go to the full 3-card agency stack
Burn Ink Preferred 3x cap first -> Amex Gold 4x cap second -> Venture X overflow. Add Amex Business Platinum specifically for limit headroom (no preset limit, 1.5x on $5K+ charges). Stack value: ~$30K/year.
$100K+/month — duplicate the stack across entities
Agencies operating multiple LLCs (one per client, or one per offer) can legitimately open the same stack under each entity. A 3-entity agency at $100K/month total runs 3 parallel Ink Preferreds (3x cap reset per entity). This is the actual reason 7-figure agencies open the same card multiple times.
$500K+/month — add float and corporate cards
Beyond $6M/year, even charge cards strain. Add Brex/Ramp for dynamic limits backed by bank balances, and negotiate Amex Centurion (invite-only, no preset limit, custom MR earn rates). Corporate cards from Capital One Spark also unlock at this volume.
Takeaway
$5K = 1 card. $10K = 2-3 cards. $50K = full stack. $500K = stack x multiple entities + float. Match the card to the stage. Over-optimizing at $5K wastes fees; under-optimizing at $50K wastes $20K+/year.
